The Stroop Effect: Why a Color Word Can Slow Your Brain Down

Reading is so practiced that it can happen almost automatically. A Stroop task creates conflict by asking you to ignore the word you can read and respond to the ink color instead.

The classic conflict

Imagine the word BLUE printed in red ink. The instruction is to answer “red.” The word itself activates “blue,” while the ink color points to “red.” That mismatch is the core of the Stroop interference effect.

Congruent and incongruent trials

When word meaning and ink color agree, the response is congruent. When they conflict, it is incongruent. In classic Stroop research, incongruent conditions tend to require more time and can produce more errors because competing information must be managed.

Why reading is hard to switch off

For fluent readers, word recognition is highly practiced. The task does not simply ask you to see a color; it asks you to prioritize one feature while suppressing another very familiar response. That makes the game a neat demonstration of selective attention and interference.

Speed and accuracy must be interpreted together

If you rush, you may answer quickly but make more mistakes. If you slow down dramatically, accuracy may improve. That is a classic speed–accuracy tradeoff. A useful personal result should consider both dimensions.

What an online version cannot claim
