A tiny visual-search test

Odd One Out is a fast attention game: scan the grid and click the one character that differs from the others. Later rounds use more cells and subtler pairs.

Your final score is elapsed time plus one second for every wrong tap. Lower is better.

HOW THE GAME SCORES

Odd One Out

Find the single symbol that differs from the rest across ten increasingly dense visual grids.

Game logic

Each round builds a grid from a similar symbol pair and randomly places one odd symbol. Incorrect clicks add a time penalty; a correct click advances the round.

Reading your score

Lower final time is better. The result separates raw elapsed time, wrong clicks and average time per round so the penalty is transparent.

Worked example

If the raw run takes 14 seconds with three one-second penalties, the scored time is 17 seconds.

Good to know

It is a visual attention mini-game, not an eye exam or diagnostic test. Screen resolution and zoom can change difficulty.

Why one tiny difference can become hard to find

Visual-search games are interesting because difficulty is not controlled only by how small the symbols are. The relationship between the target and the distractors — and the number of items competing for attention — changes the search task.

Pop-out versus search

Some targets differ by one obvious feature and seem to “pop out.” Others share several features with distractors and require a more deliberate scan.

Set size matters

When a task requires item-by-item checking, larger grids usually create more opportunities to inspect the wrong location before finding the target.

Similarity is a difficulty dial

A target that differs by color, orientation and shape is easy. A target that differs only by a subtle rotation or stroke is much harder even at the same grid size.

Strategy changes performance

Randomly darting around the grid can revisit areas. A rough left-to-right or region-by-region scan may be slower at first but can reduce wasted search.
